ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo observe the effect of motor imagery therapy on hand function and motor imagery ability of stroke patients. MethodsFrom March, 2018 to March, 2020, 41 stroke patients in Beijing Bo'ai Hospital were selected and randomly divided into control group (n = 20) and observation group (n = 21). Both groups received conventional rehabilitation training, and the observation group received motor imagery therapy in addition, for four weeks. Before and after training, the scores of Fugl-Meyer Assessment-Hand (FMA-H) and Kinesthetic and Visual Imagery Questionnaire-10 (KVIQ-10), and the accuracy of mental rotation task were compared between two groups. ResultsOne patient in the observation group dropped down. Before training, there was no significant difference in the scores of FMA-H and KVIQ, and the accuracy of mental rotation task between two groups (P > 0.05). After training, all the indexes improved in both groups (t > 6.611, P < 0.001), and the scores of FMA-H (t = 3.742, P < 0.001) and KVIQ (t = 4.122, P < 0.001), and the accuracy of mental rotation task (t = 2.075, P < 0.05) were higher in the observation group than in the control group. ConclusionMotor imagery therapy could facilliate the recovery of hand dysfunction and improve the motor imagery ability of stroke patients.

ABSTRACT

There are few researches on the modulation effect of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS) on complex spatial cognition. Especially, the influence of tDCS on the neural electrophysiological response in spatial cognition is not yet clear. This study selected the classic spatial cognition task paradigm (three-dimensional mental rotation task) as the research object. By comparing the changes in behavior and event-related potentials in different modes of tDCS before, during and after the application of tDCS, this study analyzed the behavioral and neurophysiological effects of tDCS on mental rotation. The comparison between active-tDCS and sham-tDCS showed no statistically significant difference in behavior between different stimulation modes. Still, the changes in the amplitudes of P2 and P3 during the stimulation were statistically significant. Compared with sham-tDCS, the amplitudes of P2 and P3 in active-tDCS mode showed a greater decrease during the stimulation. This study clarifies the influence of tDCS on the event-related potentials of the mental rotation task. It shows that tDCS may improve the brain information processing efficiency during the mental rotation task. Also, this study provides a reference for an in-depth understanding and exploration of the modulation effect of tDCS on complex spatial cognition.

ABSTRACT

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive low-current brain stimulation technique, which is mainly based on the different polarity of electrode stimulation to make the activation threshold of neurons different, thereby regulating the excitability of the cerebral cortex. In this paper, healthy subjects were randomly divided into three groups: anodal stimulation group, cathodal stimulation group and sham stimulation group, with 5 subjects in each group. Then, the performance data of the three groups of subjects were recorded before and after stimulation to test their mental rotation ability, and resting state and task state electroencephalogram (EEG) data were collected. Finally, through comparative analysis of the behavioral data and EEG data of the three groups of subjects, the effect of electrical stimulation of different polarities on the three-dimensional mental rotation ability was explored. The results of the study found that the correct response time/accuracy rate and the accuracy rate performance of the anodal stimulation group were higher than those of the cathodal stimulation and sham stimulation groups, and there was a significant difference (

ABSTRACT

Neste artigo, temos como objetivo compreender que relações entre componentes, compostos e o todo, os alunos do 1º ano do Ensino Básico utilizam para transformar representações bidimensionais em construções tridimensionais. Focamo-nos na análise das estratégias de dois alunos, utilizadas numa tarefa envolvendo a relação dinâmica 2D/3D. Os dados foram recolhidos durante a primeira sequência de tarefas do ciclo 1 de uma investigação em curso baseada em design. Os resultados mostram que os alunos relacionam as partes, os quadrados e o todo, a caixa, utilizando movimentos mentais, para transformar construções bidimensionais em tridimensionais. As discussões coletivas parecem contribuir para a construção colaborativa do conhecimento matemático e para a passagem de representações com modelos físicos para modelos mentais.


In this paper, we aim to understand which relationships between components, compounds and the whole do 1st grade students use to transform two-dimensional representations into three-dimensional constructions. We focus our analysis on the strategies used by two students during a task involving the dynamic relationship between 2D and 3D. Data were collected during the first set of tasks from the cycle 1 of an ongoing design-based research. Results show that students can establish relationships between the components, squares, and the whole, the box, using mental movements to transform two-dimensional constructions into three-dimensional constructions. Collective discussions seem to contribute to a collaborative construction of mathematical knowledge and to the shift from representations using physical models to mental models.


En este artículo, nuestro objetivo es comprender qué relaciones entre componentes, compuestos y el todo, los estudiantes en el primer año de Educación Básica utilizan para transformar las representaciones bidimensionales en construcciones tridimensionales. Nos centramos en el análisis de las estrategias de los estudiantes, utilizadas en una tarea que involucra la relación dinámica 2D/ 3D. Los datos se recopilaron durante la primera secuencia de tareas en el ciclo 1 de una investigación basada en el diseño, en curso. Los resultados muestran que los estudiantes relacionan las partes, los cuadrados, y el todo, de la caja a construir, usando movimientos mentales, para transformar las construcciones bidimensionales en tridimensionales. Las discusiones colectivas parecen contribuir a la construcción colaborativa del conocimiento matemático y la transición de representaciones con modelos físicos a modelos mentales.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To study the judgment strategies of stroke patients facing different visual stimulus and the main factors affecting the mental rotation test results. Methods:From May to October, 2018, 15 stroke patients and 15 age-sex-education-matched healthy controls accepted standard software-based mental rotation tests with four kinds of visual stimulus: hand back, hand palm, Chinese characters and alphabets. Reaction time and response accuracy were recorded. All the subjects were assessed with Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and the patients were assessed with Fugl-Meyer Assessment-Upper Extremities (FMA-UE) additionally. Results:When hand back, hand palm and alphabets worked as visual stimulus, the response accuracy was less in the patients than in the controls (F > 7.027, P < 0.05). For all the tests, the reaction time was more in the patients than in the controls (F > 14.827, P < 0.001). The main effect of rotation angle was significant to reaction time when picture of hands as visual stimulus (F > 7.747, P < 0.001), while it was the least at 0°. The MoCA scores negatively correlated with reaction time in both groups (r < -0.375, P < 0.05), as well as the FMA-UE scores in the patients (r < -0.581, P < 0.05). Conclusion:Different types of visual stimulus may affect the judgment strategies and results of mental rotation test. Motor imagery ability is impaired for stroke patients, however, the basic reaction model maintains somehow.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Pathological diagnosis involves very delicate and complex consequent processing that is conducted by a pathologist. The recognition of false patterns might be an important cause of misdiagnosis in the field of surgical pathology. In this study, we evaluated the influence of visual and cognitive bias in surgical pathologic diagnosis, focusing on the influence of “mental rotation.” MATERIALS AND METHODS: We designed three sets of the same images of uterine cervix biopsied specimens (original, left to right mirror images, and 180-degree rotated images), and recruited 32 pathologists to diagnose the 3 set items individually. RESULTS: First, the items found to be adequate for analysis by classical test theory, Generalizability theory, and item response theory. The results showed statistically no differences in difficulty, discrimination indices, and response duration time between the image sets. CONCLUSION: Mental rotation did not influence the pathologists' diagnosis in practice. Interestingly, outliers were more frequent in rotated image sets, suggesting that the mental rotation process may influence the pathological diagnoses of a few individual pathologists.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the characteristics of mental rotation in stroke patients and the relationship between mental rotation and visual-spatial cognitive function. Methods From March, 2012 to October, 2013, 30 stroke patients were selected as experimental group and 30 healthy subjects as control group. They were tested with hand mental rotation task, and assessed with visuospatial abilities from Mon-treal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Results The reaction time of hand mental rotation task was significantly longer in the experimental group than in the control group (F=95.6, P<0.001). The reaction time was longer with the increase of rotation angle in both groups, and was the longest as 180° of rotation (F=345.672, P<0.001). The response accuracy rate of hand mental rotation task was significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (F=6.444, P<0.05). The response accuracy rate was lower with the increase of rotation angle in both groups, and was the least as 180° of rotation (F=102.911, P<0.001). The reaction time negatively correlated with the score of visuospa-tial abilities, while the response accuracy rate positively correlated with it in the stroke patients (P<0.05). Conclusion The mental rotation ability is impaired in stroke patients, however, the respondent pattern is similar to healthy people. The mental rotation ability is correlated with visual-spatial cognitive functions in stroke patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effects of different durations of methamphetamine abuse on spatial cognitive processing.Methods The mental rotation task was used to evaluate the spatial processing function of 35 methamphetamine abusers and 30 healthy subjects.The methamphetamine abusers are divided into 2 groups according to their abuse durations,group 1 contains 16 abusers with an average duration of 1 year and group 2 contains 19 abusers with an average duration of 3 years.Participants were asked to judge the right hand/food or the left hand/food of the experimental stimuli at difference angles.The reaction time (RT) and the accurate rate (AR) of the mental rotation task were recorded.Results Compared with the control group,RT of group 1 methamphetamine abusers was longer at the angle of 0°((1469±318)ms) and 180°((1718±412)ms) (P<0.05),RT of group 2 was longer at the angle of 0°((1466±243) ms),60°((1497±294) ms) and 180°((1708±288) ms) (P <0.05).And the AR of methamphetamine abusers was higher at every angle (P<0.05).Conclusion Long-term dependence on methamphetmine can damage the abuser's spatial processing function.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effect of weightlessness simulation on processing speed of mental rotation of males in 72 h head-down tilt,in order to further reveal human performance changes caused by weightlessness.Methods During 72 h weightlessness simulation (9 am day 1 to 9 pm day 4,head-down tilt started from 9 pm day 1),16 male subjects were processed speed of rotation data byhand picture mental rotation (test 8 times),using self cross-references design,and the variation of processing speed of mental rotation by duration was analyzed.Results The linear regression analysis showed,the reaction time of each time point for each subject as the independent variable,the angle of rotation as the dependent variable,with the extension of simulated weightlessness time.The intercept(constant term of the regression equation),indicating the processing speed of non-rotation,were gradually increased with HDT time,but didn(t) reached significantly difference (F(3,14) =0.551,P =0.650) ;the slope(Regression coefficient of the regression equation),indicating the processing speed of rotation.were gradually increased with HDT time,and reached the significantly difference (F(3,14) =4.338,P =0.009).The value of intercept and slope was like upside-down U in three days,and reached the highest value at day 2.Conclusion Weightlessness simulation have affection on the speed of mental rotation,especially on the rotation speed.

ObjectiveTo explore the change of the event related potential brain topographic map on depression' mental rotation,and to perfect the brain function relation map for depression in space ability.Methods 32 depression and 29 normal healthy people were tested to make mental rotation tasks in the brain ERP system.The distribution of the changing brain topographic map were observed.Results ( 1 ) Compared with the control group ( error rate ( 29±9 ) %,response time ( 604.74 ± 54.39 ) ms,the error rate was significantly higher and response time was significantly longer in depression (error rate( 33 ± 15 )%,response time(755.22 ± 70.18 )ms,P<0.05).(2) Compared with the control group (N100:PZ( -3.78 ± 1.05)μV,CZ( -5.67 ±2.21)μV,P3( -2.34 ±0.59) μV,P4( -2.92 ±0.80) μV ;P500:PZ(7.35 ±2.61 ) μV,CZ(7.65 ± 2.42) μV,P3 (6.53 ±2.11 ) μV,P4 ( 7.29 ± 2.57 ) μV ),the total volatility was significantly lower in depression ( N 100:PZ ( - 0.31 ±0.09)μV,CZ( -2.27 ±0.57)μV,P3( -0.30 ±0.07) μV,P4( -0.33 ±0.08) μV;P500:PZ(6.04 ±2.16)μV,CZ ( 5.92 ± 2.01 ) μV,P3 ( 6.02 ± 2.11 ) μV,P4 (6.01 ± 2.34 ) μV,P < 0.05 ) and the excitability difference of the left and right parietal-occipital lobe was disappeared (P>0.05) ; Compared with the control group,in N100 the normal and mirror excitability was significantly lower,and in P500 the normal excitability was significantly lower,but mirror was significantly higher in depression (P < 0.05 ).Compared with the left and right brain,the normal excitability in the right parietal-occipital lobe was significant higher (P < 0.05 ),but the mirror excitement difference was disappeared in depression (P> 0.05 ),and the normal and mirror excitement in the right parietal-occipital lobe was both significantly higher in normal healthy people (P < 0.05 ).ConclusionDepressed patients; mental rotation ability is impaired.And the negative potential for looking forward to reaction is lower and exist the right advantage hemisphere brain in normal,but mirror advantage hemisphere disappears in depressed patients.This study suggests the brain topographic map of mental rotation ability damaged can be used as the clinical auxiliary diagnosis index.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the gender differences and the effect of three factors(the angle of rotation, left/right,palm/back) on hand mental rotation. Methods 40 healthy adults (20 males and 20 females, age; 18~26 years) were enrolled in this study. By simulation of human hand as picture stimuli,participants were instructed to decide as quickly as possible whether the stimulus was a left or right hand. The accuracy rate and reaction time of the behavior task were quantified. Results ① the subjects' reaction speed was far slower at 180° than 0°(P<0.01). ②On judgment of 0° back picture,females were faster than males(left back: males( 1033. 16 ±245.85) ms,females( 853.15 ± 142.79) ms,P=0.014; right back; males( 973.07 ±217.11) ms;,females (796.28 ±146.67 )ms, P = 0.016). And,the right hand was responded faster than left hand,with statistical significance (males; P = 0.028, females; P=0.038). ③The time of females in judging the 0° hand back ( left (853. 15 ± 142.79) ms,right (796. 27 ± 146. 67 ms) ) was shorter than palm(left ( 1002. 72 ± 227. 91) ms,right ( 986.06 ± 230. 03) ms), reached statistical significance ( both at P < 0. 001). In contrast, males in judging the 180° pictures, the speed of reaction to back(left ( 1252. 70 ±269. 35) ms,right ( 1216. 68 ±293. 54 )ms) was slower than palm with statistical significance (left: P < 0. 01, right: P = 0. 015). Conclusion The three factors (angle of rotation,left/right,and palm/back) all exert effect on the behavior of hand mental rotation. It really has gender difference on hand mental rotation. Females response faster than males.

ABSTRACT

The handedness recognition of visually perceived body parts engages motor representations that are constrained by the same biomechanical factors that limit the execution of real movements. In the present study, we used small plastic cutouts that represented the human hand to investigate the properties of mental images generated during their haptic exploration. Our working hypothesis was that any handedness recognition task that involves body parts depends on motor imagery. Forty-four blindfolded, right-handed volunteers participated in a handedness evaluation experiment using their index finger to explore either the back or palm view of a haptic stimulus that represented the human hand. The stimuli were presented in four different orientations, and we measured the subjects' response times. Our results showed that stimulus configurations that resemble awkward positions of the human hand are associated with longer response times (p < .006), indicating that the haptic exploration of stimuli that represent body parts also leads to motor imagery that is constrained by biomechanical factors

ABSTRACT

It has been shown that mental rotation of objects and human body parts is processed differently in the human brain. But what about body parts belonging to other primates? Does our brain process this information like any other object or does it instead maximize the structural similarities with our homologous body parts? We tried to answer this question by measuring the manual reaction time (MRT) of human participants discriminating the handedness of drawings representing the hands of four anthropoid primates (orangutan, chimpanzee, gorilla, and human). Twenty-four right-handed volunteers (13 males and 11 females) were instructed to judge the handedness of a hand drawing in palm view by pressing a left/right key. The orientation of hand drawings varied from 0° (fingers upwards) to 90° lateral (fingers pointing away from the midline), 180° (fingers downwards) and 90° medial (finger towards the midline). The results showed an effect of rotation angle (F(3, 69) = 19.57, P < 0.001), but not of hand identity, on MRTs. Moreover, for all hand drawings, a medial rotation elicited shorter MRTs than a lateral rotation (960 and 1169 ms, respectively, P < 0.05). This result has been previously observed for drawings of the human hand and related to biomechanical constraints of movement performance. Our findings indicate that anthropoid hands are essentially equivalent stimuli for handedness recognition. Since the task involves mentally simulating the posture and rotation of the hands, we wondered if "mirror neurons" could be involved in establishing the motor equivalence between the stimuli and the participants' own hands.
